So, grab your dice, and let's roll into the world of Qwixx!

Game Overview

Qwixx is a simple yet thrilling dice game that keeps all players engaged with every roll. Designed for 2 to 5 players aged 8 and up, a typical game lasts about 15 minutes, making it the perfect choice for family game nights or quick gaming sessions with friends

Components

  • 6 dice (2 white, and one each of red, blue, green, and yellow)
  • Score pads

Objective

The goal in Qwixx is to cross off as many numbers as possible on your score pad. The more numbers you cross off, the more points you score. However, once you cross off a number in a row, you can't cross off numbers to its left, adding a layer of strategy to your choices

How to Play

Setup

Each player receives a score pad and a pen or pencil. Determine the starting player by each player rolling a die; the highest roll goes first

Gameplay

On your turn, roll all six dice. Then, perform the following actions in order:

  1. White Dice Combination: Announce the sum of the two white dice. All players may choose to cross off this number in any of the four colored rows on their score pad
  2. Colored Combination: As the active player, choose one white die and one colored die, add their values, and announce the sum. You may then cross off this number in the corresponding colored row on your score pad. Only the active player can use this combination
  3. Passing the Dice: After your turn, pass the dice to the player on your left, who then becomes the active player

Locking Rows

If you manage to cross off the last number in a row (2 for green and blue, 12 for red and yellow) and have at least five numbers crossed off in that row, you can lock the row. Locked rows cannot be used by any player for the rest of the game, and the corresponding colored die is removed from play

Penalties

If you're unable to or choose not to cross off any numbers on your turn, you must take a penalty by crossing off one of the penalty boxes on your score pad. Each penalty box is worth -5 points at the end of the game

Ending the Game

The game ends immediately when either two rows have been locked or a player has taken four penalties. Then, players tally their scores based on the numbers they've crossed off in each row, subtracting points for penalties

Strategy Tips

Minimize Gaps

Try to minimize gaps in your rows. Skipping numbers can limit your options later in the game, especially as rows start to lock

Balance Risk and Reward

Be strategic about when to take risks. Locking a row early can give you a strategic advantage but may also limit your scoring potential in that color

Keep an Eye on Opponents

Pay attention to your opponents' score pads. If you're close to the end of the game, you might make different decisions based on the rows they are close to locking or the penalties they've accumulated

Use Penalties Wisely

While penalties are negative, sometimes taking a penalty to avoid locking yourself out of higher-scoring opportunities can be a strategic move
